Savoie et Dauphine ski jumping, SNCF Jean Raoul Chaurand-Naurac
This is a reproduction of a ski-jumping poster created by the artist Jean Raoul Chaurand-Naurac. It was published by the SNCF railway company in 1939 to promote five ski jumping events being held in January and February of that year. The first two events were held at the Chamonix Valley on the 19th of January and the 16th of February. Two more took place on 26 January and 23 February at Tarentaise, with the last one taking place at the Dauphine-Briançconnais resort on 2 February.
Naurac’s poster was produced initially produced with no text on it. This allowed the poster to be overprinted with the details of different competitions throughout the ski jumping season or even year on year. Naurac’s image depicts a ski-jumper in mid-flight preparing to land his jump. The snow-capped peaks of the Alps, possibly representing the Aiguille du Midi, and the tree-lined resort form the backdrop to the skier.
The poster has an innocent, naive charm to it. It may not be quite as dramatic as some posters of the era, but it is rare and sought-after. The poster rarely comes up at auction. In fact, the only one we can locate online was sold, almost twenty years ago, in 2003. Back then it fetched over £1000.
Jump on our superb reproduction print today and whatever the record-breaking distance needed, we’ll try to land it with you in record time! Like the ski-jumper in the poster, you won’t be disappointed with the results!
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £15. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
