See The Lands Of The Vikings Poster Vintage Scandanavian Travel Poster
The Viking longship on this vintage Scandinavia travel poster is sleek, fast, and perfect for raiding. It looks like it came straight out of the genius mind of Floki Vilgerðars the tricksie Viking boat builder from the TV hit series Vikings. Not only would Floki have been proud to have built it, but the legendary Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok and his crew would also have been honored to sail to foreign lands plundering and pillaging in search of treasure and adventure.
The superb Viking poster advertises sailings from the United States of America to the Nordic countries of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. The strapline on the poster reads ‘See the Lands of the Vikings’ to encourage American travellers to make the journey.
The Nordic poster was created by the painter, graphic artist and illustrator, Benjamin Blessum. The artist, Blessum was a Norwegian-born artist who was particularly well-known for his incredible Norwegian landscapes. For this poster, Blessum has combined all three of his job roles to create a stunning travel poster. The Viking longboat or Viking ship was the most common type of vessel in northern European waters for over 1,500 years. The poster depicts the longship that carried the Norse explorer Leif the Lucky or Leif Eriksson to the shores of North America around the year 1000. He and his crew are thought to be the first Europeans to set foot on North American soil, predating the rather tardy Christopher Columbus by half a Millenium.
Because of its Viking connotations, this dynamic and colourful poster is now fairly well sought-after, even by Americans. At the time of listing (2021), an original copy was available on an online poster site with an asking price of $2,250. In fairness, if you paid that price for it in the current poster collecting market, it would be a great entry-level price in the original poster collecting world. The price probably wouldn’t make you feel like you’ve been ransacked and pillaged, but it’s still a lot of money and you know you’d have been in a battle with your wallet.
