Klosters Grisons Graubunden Suisse Poster – Alex W Digglemannn – 1933
This is a reproduction of an iconic vintage Klosters Grisons travel poster by the renowned Swiss poster artist Alex Walter Digglemann. It features a vibrant, colourful image of a young woman in a vivid yellow jumpsuit shading herself from the sun with a bright red parasol. Against the rich blue sky, she looks like a ray of sunshine.
At the foot of the poster is an artistic representation of the famous Alpine mountains and there’s not a drop of snow to be seen anywhere. The Alps are one of the most beautiful and majestic mountain ranges in the world but in this scene, they definitely take second place to the bronzed beauty in the foreground. The image captures the idyllic Swiss Alpine summer resort and the elegant, understated class of the resort itself.
Nestled in the Alps, Klosters has a long history as a winter and summer destination. More than 150 years ago, it was already known as a fashionable place to spend time. Developments in the resort in the 1950s turned Klosters into a stylish resort for connoisseurs, royalty and many famous names from the American and British film, music and theatre scene.
Klosters’ reputation drew famous stars including Paul Newman, Yul Brynner, Lauren Bacall, Gregory Peck, Greta Garbo. Gene Kelly, Rex Harrison, several of whom, moved to Klosters and made it their second home. The stars characterised the style, glamour and atmosphere of the holiday village for decades. They helped make Klosters one of the most famous skiing resorts in the world. The resort is particularly well-known in Britain as the ski resort of choice for many members of the royal family. For over thirty years, it was a favorite of Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana and it was the resort William and Harry learned to ski in.
Diggelmann was a legendary poster artist of his time. He designed numerous posters for sports and travel resorts such as Gstaad, Château d’Oex, St. Moritz and Klosters with his skiing posters from the 1930s being some of his most popular works. His posters are extremely rare and are highly sought after by collectors. If you’re lucky enough to find an original copy of this Klosters Grisons poster for sale, expect to pay upwards of £1,500.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
