Gurnigel Wintersport Schweiz Poster – Erika von Kager – 1921
The Gurnigel Wintersport Schweiz Poster is a vintage Swiss travel poster that was created to promote winter sports in the Gurnigel region. It features skiing in particular, because of the sport’s meteoric rise in popularity in the 1920s. The poster artwork was created by the German artist Erika von Kager in 1921.
The Gurnigel poster features a skier taking the mountain descent steadily as he skis on a gentle slope on the Gurnigel Pass. The skier seems to be concentrating hard on what he is doing and is oblivious to the two skiers in the foreground of the poster. The young couple are taking a quick break from skiing allowing the man to adjust the straps on his skis. The woman, dressed in her Mrs Claus outfit waits patiently before they set off again. The vibrant yellows and reds in the illustration make the skiers stand out prominently against the cool white snow.
The Gurnigel region is located in the Bernese Oberland, and it is well-known for its scenic beauty and excellent skiing conditions. Kager has included the famous mountain peaks that run along the high mountain pass between Riggisberg and Zolhaus to form a dramatic backdrop to the image.
The text on the Gurnigel Wintersport Schweiz Poster reads – Auskunft durch die Verkehrsbureaux oder durch die Direktion des Grand Hotel, Gurnigel, Berner Oberland. This translates in to English as – Information from the traffic offices or from the management of the Grand Hotel, Gurnigel, Bernese Oberland.
Original copies of this poster in top condition currently (2020) sell for between £2,000 and £2,500.

Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
