Mexico Pride of Indian Culture vintage travel poster – Aztec Sun Stone – c1950

This vintage Mexican Pride of Indian Culture poster features an image characteristically Mexican colourful image depicting the early 16th century Aztec sun stone, which is widely considered to be the most famous work of Mexica sculpture. The Piedra del Sol as it is known in Spanish measures 358 centimetres in diameter and 98 centimetres thick. It is thought to be some form of calendar stone featuring, as it does, carvings of ‘figures of the months and years, days and weeks were sculpted” The exact date of its creation is unknown, however, the name glyph of the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II is carved into the central disc dates the monument.  Moctezuma reigned between 1502 and 1520, so the stone is presumed to date from this time.

On the poster below the Piedra del Sol is a series of images of in a typically Aztec art style. The images are thought to be of some of the many Aztecs Gods. The Aztecs had a complex assortment of deities. Scholars studying the Aztec religion have identified no fewer than 200 gods and goddesses, divided into three groups, with each group supervising one aspect of the universe such as the heaven or the sky; the rain, fertility and agriculture; and finally the war and sacrifice.

The poster was produced by the Direccion General de Turismo or the Tourist Office of Mexico and was printed by Juarez around 1950.
