Maina La Voyante poster.
This vintage Maina La Voyante poster was created by Louis Galice circa 1920.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there was a fascination with what we would call the dark arts. Darwin’s book, ‘The Origin of the Species’, gave the world a new theory about how man came to live on the planet. His theory ‘evolution’ was at odds with the religious belief of creation.
Darwin’s mind-blowing theory led many Victorians to question and reevaluate other aspects of life. An avid interest in freak shows, circuses, magic shows, mind-reading, fortune-telling, the occult, astrology, physics, horoscopes, seances, the afterlife, tarot cards and palm readings became phenomenally popular.
This vintage French poster advertises the services of a French clairvoyant named Maina. Any information about the young psychic seems to have got lost in the mists of time. It would have been quite expensive to have an artist of Louis Gallice’s stature paint your portrait and print a quantity of posters. So, presumably, Maina was popular clairvoyant and made a good living out of her work. She was successful enough to afford not just one but at least two different posters. A second poster survives in which she is considerably older. However, there isn’t any more information available about the young woman. We could do with a psychic to get in touch with her to find out more!
Maina Poster from Friends TV show.
I’m a huge fan of the TV show “Friends”. Always have been. I always loved the variety of poster art that were used as props on the show. As it turns out Maina was one of the unsung heros of the show, starring in as many episodes of the hit TV series as Monica, Joey, Chandler Phoebe and Rachel. Maina appeared in the full ten seasons in Monica’s apartment, hanging on the wall next to her front door.
Not to be outdone by the Friends cast at the 2021 reunion, Maina also made a cameo appearance during the cast’s walkabout of the original set. Fans of the show made Maina a Twitter sensation when they suggested that she looks exactly like the British comedian Noel Fielding.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and poster for just £22.
