Southend Pier: A Beacon of Seaside Grandeur
The majestic Southend Pier stands as the town’s most treasured historical icon and proudly holds the title of the longest pleasure pier in the world. Stretching an incredible 1.33 miles out into the Thames Estuary, it firmly put Southend on the map and into the record books. In the early 19th century, the burgeoning belief in the health benefits of sea air drew countless Londoners to Southend’s shores.
However, Southend’s seven miles of coastline, characterised by extensive mudflats, posed a challenge: the water remained shallow even at high tide, receding dramatically at low tide.
This meant larger passenger boats struggled to dock close to shore, and at low tide, docking was impossible. Consequently, many potential visitors sailed past Southend for resorts with better docking facilities. To overcome this hurdle, local dignitaries championed the construction of a pier, ensuring passenger boats could reach Southend regardless of the tide.
By 1850, the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway arrived, bringing a fresh influx of visitors from East London. Work on the new iron pier commenced in 1887, opening to the public that very summer, though construction continued. The magnificent iron pier was finally completed in 1889, at a cost of almost £70,000 (equivalent to over £9.5 million today).
The Pier’s Enduring Popularity and the Fair Poster’s Legacy
The new Southend Pier was an instant sensation, proving so popular that demand quickly outstripped its initial capabilities. A further extension was proposed, and in 1890, a single-track electric railway – the first pier railway in the country – began operation. Such was its immense popularity that in 1903 alone, approximately one million people paid admission to use the pier, while a quarter of a million passengers disembarked from pleasure steamboats.
The Southend Pier celebrated its centenary on 23rd July 1935, cementing its place in British seaside history. After the war, the pier reopened in 1945, with visitor numbers soaring past pre-war levels, peaking at an astonishing 5.75 million in 1949–50. This vintage Fair Poster perfectly captures the vibrant spirit of a bygone era, beckoning you to discover Southend’s enduring charm.
