Bugatti Royale poster 1931
The Bugatti Royale poster and the legend it portrays
The Bugatti Royale poster serves as a captivating window into one of the most extraordinary and enigmatic automotive creations of all time. This legendary car, the Bugatti Type 41 Royale, represents the pinnacle of automotive luxury and engineering prowess, a testament to the vision and ambition of its creator, Ettore Bugatti.
The Birth of a Legend: The Bugatti Royale
Conceived in the late 1920s, the Royale was born from Ettore Bugatti’s audacious ambition to create the most opulent and powerful car in the world. Designed to cater to the demands of royalty, heads of state, and the ultra-wealthy, the Royale was an engineering marvel.
Its heart was a colossal 12.7-liter straight-eight engine, a masterpiece of mechanical artistry that delivered a staggering 300 horsepower. This immense power was harnessed to propel a chassis of immense proportions, adorned with coachwork crafted by renowned artisans.
The Royale was not merely a means of transportation; it was an art form. Each car was meticulously customized to the individual tastes of its intended owner, resulting in a unique expression of automotive extravagance. From the opulent interiors, adorned with the finest materials, to the exquisitely sculpted exteriors, the Royale was a testament to the era’s penchant for artistic expression and luxurious living.
A Victim of the Great Depression
Despite its undeniable grandeur, the Royale’s reign was short-lived. The onset of the Great Depression in the early 1930s severely impacted the global economy, shattering the dreams of potential buyers. The Royale, with its astronomical price tag (around $130,000 in 1932, an unimaginable sum for the time), proved to be a victim of this economic downturn.
Ettore Bugatti, initially aiming to produce 25 Royales, was forced to scale back his ambitions dramatically. Only six of these magnificent machines were ever built, each a unique testament to a bygone era of automotive excess. Remarkably, all six Royales still exist today, serving as enduring symbols of automotive history.
The Art Deco Influence: The Bugatti Royale poster
The Bugatti Royale poster, much like the car itself, reflects the prevailing aesthetic of the Art Deco movement. Characterised by its emphasis on geometric forms, streamlined elegance, and a sense of opulent luxury, Art Deco permeated many facets of life during the 1920s and 1930s.
The poster masterfully captures the essence of the Royale. The artist skillfully employs perspective to accentuate the car’s imposing presence, highlighting its extraordinary length of 21 feet. The long, sweeping lines of the bonnet, perfectly aligned with the horizon, convey a sense of effortless speed and dynamism. The backdrop, featuring stylized trees reminiscent of the work of the renowned Art Deco artist A.M. Cassandre, further enhances the car’s sense of grandeur and exclusivity.
A Record-Breaking Legacy
The Bugatti Royale poster played a significant role in promoting the auction of a Royale in 1987 at Christie’s. This particular car fetched a staggering $9.8 million, setting a new world record for the most expensive car ever sold at auction.
However, the record for the highest price paid for a Royale was set in 1983, when a Kellener-bodied Royale sold at Christie’s for an astonishing $8.7 million. When adjusted for inflation, this price would translate to over $16 million in today’s terms, a figure eclipsed only by other Royales and the first Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.
A new chapter with the French National Railway SNCF
While the Royale may have been a commercial disappointment in its original form, its impact on automotive history is undeniable. The development of the Royale led to unexpected successes for Bugatti. To utilise the remaining 23 engines intended for the Royale, Bugatti repurposed them for a series of high-performance railcars.
These railcars, built for the French National Railway (SNCF), proved to be highly successful. Seventy-nine railcars were produced, using a total of 186 Royale engines. These powerful engines, even when derated to produce around 200 horsepower, delivered exceptional performance. One such railcar even achieved a world average speed record of 122 mph (196 km/h) over a distance of 43.9 miles.
