1955 Monaco Grand Prix poster – Jacques Ramel
Get the hearts of any Grand Prix automobile enthusiast racing with this vintage 1955 Monaco Grand Prix poster. Featuring artwork by the acclaimed Jacques Ramel, this stunning motorsport poster was originally created to promote the legendary 1955 Monaco Grand Prix. It vividly captures the classic bright red Maserati 250F being hotly pursued by the magnificent silver Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner through the iconic streets of Monaco.
Ramel’s dramatic image perfectly captures the race leaders flat out, having just burst from the darkness of the famous Tir-aux-Pigeons tunnel. The powerful GP racing cars are depicted speeding towards the Chicane alongside the sparkling waters of Monaco’s harbour. According to the Mercedes-Benz website, the Mercedes W196R used in the 1955 motorsport season could achieve a top speed of around 300 km/h!
This stretch of the Monaco circuit depicted on the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix poster, is indeed the fastest part of the track, where cars would have been pushing those incredible speeds. Ramel’s unique viewpoint, as if from a camera on the tarmac, shows the bright red No. 4 sports car thundering over it at high speed, its blurred wheels conveying a genuine sense of raw power and thrilling velocity.
The Unforgettable 1955 Monaco Grand Prix Race
The Monaco Grand Prix is undeniably one of the most iconic races in Formula One history. Held annually on the narrow, challenging streets of Monte Carlo, it’s famous for its tight corners and electrifying atmosphere. The 1955 race was no exception, attracting motorsport giants like Juan Manuel Fangio, Jean Behra, Stirling Moss, Luigi Villoresi, Maurice Trintignant, Mike Hawthorn, and the extraordinary Louis Chiron, who, at 55 years and 292 days, holds the record as the oldest driver to start a Grand Prix.
The XIII Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco took place on the 3.145km street circuit, the Circuit de Monaco, over 100 laps, covering a total distance of 195.5 miles. This event was the second of seven races in the 1955 World Championship of Drivers and was honourably named the Grand Prix d’Europe.
Mercedes had signed Stirling Moss for the 1955 season, with his previous spot at Maserati being filled by Jean Behra. Early in the race, Fangio and Moss, driving the dominant Mercedes Silver Arrows, held first and second place. However, at the halfway mark, Fangio’s car suffered transmission problems, forcing him to retire and handing the lead to Stirling Moss, ahead of Ascari and Castellotti.
On Lap 79, with Moss almost a lap ahead and seemingly guaranteed victory, his chances evaporated on Lap 80 when his Mercedes engine dramatically blew. The lead then fell to Ascari, until he tragically misjudged the chicane coming out of the tunnel, sending his Lancia crashing through the barriers and into the harbour. The Italian racing driver famously had to swim to safety.
With the race favourites out, French driver Maurice Trintignant, in his Ferrari 625, inherited and maintained the lead to cross the finish line, securing his first ever Formula One victory. Eugenio Castellotti took second place in a Lancia D50, and Jean Behra secured third in his Maserati 250F. This race marked not only Trintignant’s first win but also the first win for Englebert tyres, the first podium and points for Eugenio Castellotti, and a debut Grand Prix points finish for Cesare Perdisa. It was also a historic moment as the first win for a French Formula One driver.
