This captivating Welcome to Israel Poster, a collaborative effort by Jan Lewitt and George Him, originated in Israel but was created by two Jewish professional graphic artists based in England. It beautifully encapsulates the values and mission of Keren Hayesod, established in London in 1920, which stands as the leading worldwide fundraising organization for Israel, serving as the fundraising arm of the Jewish People and the Zionist Movement.
The poster, proudly bearing the inscription “Keren Hayesod welcomes new arrivals to Israel” carries a heartfelt expression of Kibbutz values. It emphasizes the profound significance of working the land and greening the desert, underscoring the route to transform Israel into the promised land of milk and honey.
Jan Lewitt and George Him ingeniously express this message through a striking image, cleverly portraying two farm tractors working in unison, yet separately, tilling the arid land. As they plow in synchronized formation, they create a resplendent Magen David or Star of David in the soil. This symbol, derived from the Medieval Seal of Solomon, holds historical and mystical significance, having been cherished by both Muslims and Kabbalistic Jews for decorative purposes. Its adoption as a distinctive emblem for the Jewish people and religion dates back to 17th-century Prague and remains at the heart of the State of Israel’s national flag.
Beyond the captivating depiction of the Star of David, the artist skillfully captures the various stages of farming. The image gracefully transitions from plowed land to the beginnings of the greening process and ultimately fertile soil teeming with flourishing crops. This vibrant representation celebrates the beauty of agricultural progress and the fruitful transformation of the land.
The poster stands as a magnificent testament to the enduring vision of Keren Hayesod and the collective spirit that drives the realisation of Israel’s dream. It eloquently showcases the unyielding commitment to cultivating the land and forging a prosperous future for the nation. With its inspiring symbolism and artistic brilliance, this poster serves as a timeless tribute to the resilience and determination of the Jewish people and their quest to turn the land of Israel into a thriving and bountiful home.
Keren Hayesod the United Israel Appeal
Keren Hayesod, The Foundation Fund or the United Israel Appeal is an official fundraising organisation for Israel, operating in an impressive 45 countries! Its roots go back to the historic World Zionist Congress in London between July 7 and 24, 1920. From the very beginning, its goal was clear and ambitious – to provide crucial resources for establishing a Jewish homeland in Palestine, turning a long-held dream into a real possibility.
The inspiration behind Keren Hayesod’s mission came from the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which recognized the importance of creating a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. With the support of remarkable leaders like Chaim Weizmann, Albert Einstein, and Ze’ev Jabotinsky, they embarked on a journey to pave the way for a Jewish National Home, funding vital projects like the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Bank Hapoalim.
Despite facing tough times during the worldwide economic depression in 1929, Keren Hayesod stood strong and provided support to German Jews escaping the clutches of Nazi persecution. They played a part in developing Haifa Bay suburbs and stood by the talented musicians of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
Throughout the years, Keren Hayesod has left an indelible mark, establishing over 900 urban and rural settlements in Israel, offering homes and jobs to new immigrants. Their contributions during and after World War II were significant, running emergency campaigns and helping concentration camp survivors find refuge in Palestine, even in the face of British immigration restrictions.
While Keren Hayesod has faced its share of challenges, including tragic losses during the Holocaust and the 1948 car bomb attack, they have never faltered in their commitment to the cause.
Today, Keren Hayesod continues to make a profound impact, serving thousands of disadvantaged individuals through an array of social and cultural programs. From educational youth villages to mentoring projects and shelters for Holocaust survivors and the elderly, they are making a real difference.
Keren Hayesod marked its centenary in 2020. The organisation is as dedicated as ever to their vision, focusing on supporting peripheral cities in Israel and promoting social equality. Their unwavering passion and dedication truly make them a driving force in shaping a brighter future for Israel and its people.
