Schweiz Skirennen Unterwasser poster – 1939
Martin Peiket’s Schweiz Skirennen Unterwasser poster is a prime example of his work from the late 1930s. The poster was commissioned by the Swiss National Ski Association to advertise the 1939 Swiss National downhill ski races.
It features a skier carving a turn down a mountainside veering around the a marker in the form of the national Swiss flag. Peikert’s incredible image captures the drama, speed and movement of the Alpine skier as he descends the Unterwasser mountainside.
Peiket’s use of bold lines and bright colours is reminiscent of Art Deco posters, and his graphic style helped to make him one of the most popular poster artists in Switzerland during the 1930s.
The Schweiz Skirennen Unterwasser poster was created to promote the 1939 Swiss National downhill ski races held on 3-5 March 1939 at Unterwasser, St Gallen in Switzerland.
The poster reads Schweiz Skirennen Unterwasser, 3-5 Marz 1939. It was originally printed by Eidenbenz-Seitz & Co. in St. Gallen. In it’s original form this particular poster is a rare find, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. It also easy to understand why original copies of this poster sell for in excess of £14,000.

Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
