Royal Rothesay Isle of Bute poster – WM Fagin –
£4.50 – £18.00
Poster: Royal Rothesay Isle of Bute poster – JMF – c1950.
We imagine there’s a generation of people out the for whom this vintage Isle of Bute Railway poster will bring lots of memories flooding back.
This is a reproduction of a great Rothesay poster created by the artist by JM n. It was commissioned and produced by British Railways. The poster has a similar viewpoint to Robert Hounslow’s Royal Rothesay poster produced more than twenty years earlier. For this poster we have a beautiful guide with us in a yellow dress. Standing on a hill somewhere near near St Blane’s Chapel or Kelspoke Castle she is directing us to take in the view down towards the sea front and beach at Kilchatten Bay.
Rothesay is the main town of the Isle of Bute, a small island along the coast of the Firth of Clyde. With the introduction of the railway in the Victorian era, Rothesay became a popular tourist destination, especially popular with the Glaswegians. As can be seen from the poster the ferry ships were regular visitors to the area. At one time up to 100 ferries would drop off and pick up passengers from the pier jetty. The poster shows plenty of sightseers and sunbathers milling around on the pier and relaxing on Rothesay beach. Dozens of boats are on the water in the bay or moored up in the small harbour. It’s a great image of how Rothesay would have appeared in the 1950s.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a print and a frame for a great price.
