Lowestoft Seaside – UK
£4.50 – £16.00
Lowestoft is a traditional English seaside town in the county of Suffolk. It has always been renowned for the quality of the beach and seafront, the golden sands and stunning views across the Suffolk Coast Line make this area popular with the community and is a must visit for any visitor. In the 1930’s, Henry George Gawthorn was commissioned by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway to get this message across and produce a poster to entice rail travel passengers to the area.
Gawthorn chose to illustrate the wide sandy beaches, seafront, harbour and pier of Lowestoft’s South Beach which because of the era and the attire of the people in the image, has an almost art deco feel to it. A time when stylish was the way to be. The gentleman in a jacket and tie, smoking his pipe and carrying a towel, walking with his wife. She in turn making a conversation with a friend on the seafront who is wearing a very stylish outfit for playing tennis. Lowestoft’s South Pier runs almost the entire width of the poster and you can just see the tops of the sails and the chimney of a steam ship in the harbour beyond. The Lowestoft South Pier Pavillion can clearly be seen on the pier. Sadly this building was destoyed in World War II and had to be demolished. It’s replacement, constructed in the early 1950’s, unfortunately doesn’t have anywhere the same architectural quality or appeal to it.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
