La Ciotat poster – French travel poster – Allut Piny – c1930
This fabulous reproduction of a vintage La Ciotat poster entices us to the heart of the French Riviera. Perched high atop the lofty cliffs near the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Garde, the vantage point offers a stunning panoramic vista. This captivating scene, created by French poster artist Allut Piny, unfolds across the picturesque seaside resort of La Ciotat, nestled along the sparkling Mediterranean coast.
During the 1930s, the French Riviera, which includes La Ciotat, was becoming increasingly popular with wealthy travellers. The area’s mild climate, beautiful beaches, and luxurious hotels made it a perfect getaway for those looking to escape the cold winters of northern Europe and the United States. This La Ciotat poster was published and produced in the early 1930s, to lure those tourists and holidaymakers, by train, to the beautiful seaside resort.
Awash in the warm hues and bright colours of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, the poster artwork is reminiscent of the work of renowned poster artist Roger Broders. Piny’s colourful artwork, rich in reds, warm yellows, deep blues, and greens, entices you to explore the hidden coves, charming harbor, and vibrant energy of this delightful coastal town.
The view unrolls before us. From high in the botanical gardens of the Parc du Mugel, among the tall pine trees, local tropical fauna and verdant green shrubbery, the landscapes fall away dramatically. Dozens of white buildings, villas of all sizes, with provincial red tiled roofs look like steps leading us down to La Ciotat Harbour.
Through the trees and foliage, the walled marina protects the local fishing boats and sailing yachts from the east winds. The lighthouse “Le Mole Berouard” stands prominently on the harbor head in the center of La Ciotat. To the left, the impressive 26m belfry tower of the old Town Hall, now the Ciotaden Museum, keeps time over the harbour.
Peek through the narrow gap between the two closest trees and you’ll see the Eglise Notre Dame de l’Assomption, or Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. Ideally situated in the heart of La Ciotat’s pedestrian streets, it gazes out over the old port, a watchful presence offering a sense of both peace and protection to the bustling harbor below.
Standing at an impressive 394 meters (1,293 feet), the headland to the far right is Cap d’Aigle, also known as Eagle’s Head. It’s the highest point in the Calanques National Park, and its name reflects its resemblance to a majestic bird. If Pliny’s illustration is anything to go by, the likeness is quite apt. Just above Cap d’Aigle, jutting out of the deep blue Mediterranean water is the beautiful and unspoiled island known as Île Verte.
As the 1930s unfolded and leisure activities boomed for the affluent, La Ciotat emerged as a captivating playground for the wealthy and adventurous. Yachting became a prized pursuit. As this La Ciotat poster shows, the cool blue waters of the Baie de la Ciotat would have teemed with graceful sailing boats, dancing in the azure Mediterranean waters.
Piny’s captivating portrait of La Ciotat stretches across the bay, capturing the expanse of water all the way to Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer. The Sainte-Victoire mountain range rises majestically in the background, its peaks framed by a vibrant yellow sky.
