This rare and highly sought-after Gstaad ski poster was created in 1930 to promote the XII Oberl Association Ski Races. The two-day skiing competition was held on January 25 and 26 in Gstaad, Bern in Switzerland. This fabulous skiing poster was produced by the Swiss Ski Association (SSV). Its striking image is printed in two colours, red and blue. It features three skiers weaving between the pine trees silhouetted against the blue and white snow-covered slopes of the Swiss Oberland, with the mountain peaks of the Swiss Alps pictured against a warm red sky. It’s a beautiful poster that perfectly captures the excitement and gratifying physical activity of skiing in some of the world’s most majestic scenery.
The text on the poster reads: GSTAAD. 25-26 Januar 1930. Aus Scheidungs Kämpfe der Oslo-mansnschaft des Schweiz Ski-Verbandes. XII Oberl. Verbands Skirennen. This essence of the translation into English is: The elimination rounds of the Oslo team at the 12th Bernese Oberland Association Ski Races organised by the Swiss Ski Association.
This impressive Gstaad Verbands-Skirennen poster was created by an unknown artist. This and the fact that very little information can be found regarding the event itself, it’s perhaps a surprise that original copies of this poster command such high prices when they come up at auction. For example, an original was put up for sale on an auction site in 2021 and realised a sale price of £10,000!
