Chester – Bridge Street 1895

Chester is a walled city in Cheshire, England, on the River Dee, close to the border with Wales. It was originally founded, as a Roman fortress, given the name Deva Victrix in 71AD. Chester is one of the best-preserved walled cities in Britain with a number of medieval buildings, but, despite appearances, many of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are Victorian restorations. 

This vintage travel poster features Chester Rows as seen from the Cross which, although looks much older, was rebuilt in 1848. The beautiful black and white building sits on the corner of Bridge Street and Eastgate Street, two of Chester’s  four original streets. The others being  Northgate Street and Watergate Street that all met up at the High Cross.
