Britons, Lord Kitchener Wants You – Alfred Leeter
£4.50 – £16.00
This poster is one of the most iconic and enduring images of the First World War and is the poster most commonly associated with inspiring young men to join the army featured an image of Lord Kitchener pointing at the audience.
Lord Kitchener Wants You is a 1914 advertisement by Alfred Leeter which was developed into a recruitment poster. It depicts Lord Kitchener above the words “WANTS YOU”. Kitchener, wearing the cap of aBritish Field Marshall, stares and points at the viewer calling them to enlist in the British Army. The image is considered one of the most iconic and enduring images of World War I.
Although it is now disputed that the poster had any actual impact on recruitment or was even in popular circulation at the time the poster had a huge influence inspiring many imitations in other countries, including the other iconic Uncle Sam, I want you variation by James Montgomery Flagg, created in 1917.
Way back in 2014, an original copy of this poster sold for £18,240.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a print and frame for a great price.
