Poster: Lloyd Triestino shipping poster Societa di Navigazione a Vapore, Trieste
Lloyd Triestino was the largest of the Italian Shipping companies as well as one of the world’s biggest. The company was created in 1919. Originally known as Österreichischer Lloyd’ or Austrian Lloyd, (founded in 1833) the company changed its name to Lloyd Triestino when Trieste became a part of Italy in a settlement following the First World War.
The company suffered heavily during the Second World War, losing 68 of its ships. At the end of the war the company was reduced to just five ships. However, by the end of the 1930’s Lloyd Triestino, with its offshoot Italia di Navigazione, had recovered sufficiently enough to once again become a major world shipping power. At this time the company owned a fleet of 85 vessels that offered 17 services to east Africa, southern Africa, Asia, and Australia.

The Lloyd Triestino Shipping Company embraced the work of many Italian artists for it’s publicity and advertising material. A long list of artists worked with the company many of which were from Trieste itself. Artists include: Augusto Černigoj, Marcello Claris, Marcello Dudovich, Ugo Flumiani, Tonci Fantoni, Giovanni Giordano Lanza, Lauro Laghi, Marcello Claris ,Piero Lucano, Guido Marussig, Argio Orell, and Antonio Quaiatti.
In addition to publicity and advertising posters, the artists were also responsible for the covers of the prestigious illustrated travel magazine Sul Mare or ‘On the Sea’. The magazine was distributed onboard Lloyd Triestino’s ships, in selected bookstores, travel agencies, and hotels and other outets between 1925 and 1944. A total of 148 issues were published.
Other Lloyd Triestino shipping posters
Over the decades the Lloyd Triestino shipping group were responsible for many classic vintage travel posters. Many of them are now rare and highly collectible. One of the most famous and well-known is Marcello
Dudovich‘s 1938 poster created to promote services to Bombay in India. Other great examples are Gino
Boccasile‘s 1937 poster advertising sailings to China and Petrionio
Bollettino Mensile print. Our personal favourites are a set of four posters created by the artist Giuseppe
Riccobaldi. The four posters produced around 1931 advertise travel to Egypt. They each feature different famous Egyptian statues. The stunning illustrations include The Colossi of Memon, The statue of Wepawet and the Sphinx.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £15.
