Wengen Suisse Oberland Bernois vintage skiing poster
This Swiss skiing poster is a bit unique, in that the Wengen winter scene is depicted through the eyes of a woman. The poster promoting the popular ski resort of Wengen is one of very few created in the 1920s and 1930s, by a female poster artist. The lady in question was Klara Cecillé Borter.
Borter has offered us a picturesque scene of the resort of Wengen from high up in Bernese Oberland. As the poster shows the tiny resort nestled on a sunny, sheltered terrace surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger mountains with spectacular views across the breathtaking Lauterbrunnen valley.
A cheerful-looking young woman is portrayed wearing a fashionable, bright red ski-suit and matching hat. She is standing on top of a hill with one ski on as she gets herself prepared for the descent back down to the Palace Hotel. At the foot of the hill, Borter has portrayed guests enjoying ice skating, sledding, figure skating, and curling on the Palace Hotel’s ice rink.
The artist Klara Cecille Borter
The artist Klara Borter was born in Interlaken in 1888. She was the daughter of the man who built the Palace Hotel in Wengen. Borter is probably best known for the Swiss Impressionist & Modernist oil paintings she painted on canvas. She did however, produce at least four travel posters for the Wengen resort, including one advertising her dad’s Palace Hotel.
Clara (Klara) Borter’s work has appreciated significantly over the last decade, with one of her oil paintings acheiving over $13,000 at auction. Even her posters have increased significantly in price. An original vintage copy of this poster sold in 2019 for £2,500.
