A dramatic image of a powerful downhill skier adorns this vintage Vosges Poster. The poster was created by the French artist Théodore Pfiefer, who is better known as Theo Doro, for the Chemins de Fer de L’Est. The Sports d’Hiver dans les Vosges poster features a skier is shown speeding across the Vosges mountain range. The artist has depicted the line skier virtually silhouetted against the rays of light that streak down behind him, hitting the crisp white snow around him.

Compared to many vintage ski posters the image on this Vosges poster might appear quite stark. Doro hasn’t afforded the poster anything that might distract the viewer away from skiing. So, there are no alpine huts, pine trees or ski-lifts. There’s no sunshine, smiles, beautiful Swiss countryside or even snow-capped mountain tops. The poster just features a skier, his skis and the snow. It’s a no-nonsense skiing poster that suggests a ‘Let’s get on with it’ attitude.

Doro’s poster design cleverly uses light to create a sense of movement and energy. The skier is practically leaping off the canvas, while the rays of light behind the skier  add a feeling of dynamism and excitement. This is further emphasized by the use of just two colours, black and blue to create a strong contrast between the skier and the background. The result is an energetic and visually striking painting that captures the thrill of skiing.
