Discovering the Alps with the 1934 Davos Parsenn Poster

The 1934 Davos Parsenn Poster stands as a magnificent example of a vintage skiing poster that defined an era. It was designed by Otto Baumberger, a pivotal figure in the history of Swiss graphic art. Widely regarded as the originator of the Swiss poster, Baumberger’s career spanned four decades, during which he produced an estimated 230 posters.

His exceptional ability to create images that sparked a wanderlust for Switzerland was extraordinary. His designs, including numerous travel and skiing posters, were a masterclass in visual communication and artistry.

The Daring Composition of a New Era

At first glance, the 1934 Davos Parsenn Poster is captivating but mysterious. Baumberger uses an almost abstract style, focusing on a bold, dynamic composition. The focal point is the bright red funicular train, its carriage angled dramatically to convey the steep 47-degree climb it undertakes on its journey.

This powerful perspective highlights the engineering marvel of the funicular, which had only opened in 1931. Through its windows, one can just make out the silhouettes of a few passengers, their eyes fixed on the stunning alpine panorama unfolding before them. This 1934 Davos Parsenn Poster perfectly captured the excitement of this new mode of mountain transport.

A Scene Unfolds: The Magic of Davos

As you spend more time with the 1934 Davos Parsenn Poster, the details come into sharper focus. The jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Plessur Alps emerge in the background, anchoring the scene with a sense of majestic scale. Far below, the charming, miniature buildings of Davos town are visible at the foot of the mountain, hinting at the vibrant resort life awaiting visitors.

The final clue to the poster’s purpose is subtle yet brilliant: the pair of skis propped up behind the passengers in the open window of the funicular. With this detail, the full narrative of the vintage skiing poster becomes clear, inviting viewers to imagine themselves on the slopes. This sophisticated, layered storytelling is a hallmark of Baumberger’s work.
