Berger 45 Type Marseillais poster
This Berger 45 poster is the best-known work of the artist Roland Ansieau. It was produced to advertise a French absinthe beverage Berger 45.
The producer of the beverage was C.F. Berger who was born in Switzerland. He opened his own distillery in Couvet, Neufchatel in Switzerland in 1823 where he produced several Swiss style absinthes.
In 1910 the Swiss authorities banned the drinking of absinthe so, Berger moved to France to open a distillery to continue to produce the beverage he had developed. He set up his wine house in Marseille in 1933. The absinthe liquor Berger 45 was a direct competitor of the more famous Pernod and Pastis brands.
The 1935 poster shows an overhead view of a waiter carrying a tray with a bottle of Berger 45. There is only one glass on the tray. Now he may be taking the drink to a customer waiting at a table outside. Now call me cynical, but I’ve got a suspicion he’s taking the bottle off somewhere to drink himself!

Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a print and frame for a great price.
