This fantastic Knaresborough, Yorkshire railway poster was created by the artist Jack Merriott in 1952. He was commissioned by British Railways who required a poster to attract tourists to travel to the picturesque ancient market town. In the case of this particular poster it was produced to appeal to the American public with the poster explaining that further information can be obtained at British Railways offices .n New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto.

The poster has been painted from water level, possibly from one of the punts seen in the image. Merriott’s view presents a subtle but important nod to the railways as a British Railways trains is just visible as it speeds off the top left of the poster.

The main focus of the poster is the castellated viaduct that spans the River Nidd in the Nidd Gorge. It was built in 1851 by Thomas Grainger for the Leeds & Thirsk Railway. The viaduct now carries trains between Leeds and York via Harrogate. The  character of the viaduct is in keeping with the Medieval character of the town. Through one of the viaduct’s arches is Knaresborough Castle, the ruined Norman fortress that sits on a cliff above the river. This is a really cool poster.
