Whitby, Captain Cook railway poster – Doris Kinkeisen – 1935
Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer and Captain in the British Navy. He was born in Marton-in-Cleveland, near Middlesbrough in Yorkshire. Cook farmed with his father until the age of 18, when he was offered an apprenticeship by a Quaker shipowner in a small seaside village near Whitby, England. Cook is now famous for his three voyages to the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1779.
This vintage LNER railway poster was created by the artist Doris Zinkeisen. It shows Captain Cook and two Royal Navy officers consulting a chart on top of a barrel, with ships in Whitby harbour. St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey are visible in the background. Accompanying text reads “His voyages round the world for making new discoveries were undertaken in the Endeavour in 1768 and the Resolution in 1772. Both these ships were built at Whitby. This poster was originally part of the railways ongoing ‘It’s quicker by rail’ advertising campaign.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a print and a frame for a great price.
