Poster: Weston-Super-Mare Air Like Wine poster – William A. Sennett – c1935
Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside! We’d like it even more if the seagulls fed you glasses of red wine. This vintage Weston Super Mare poster was created to appeal to the American market to encourage tourism to the original British seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare on the north Somerset coast.
The poster’s bold, colourful and simple art deco design features a young woman in a red bathing suit standing on Weston Super Mare beach. Seagulls are flying towards her, not an unusual happening in British seaside towns. What is unusual is that the first seagull is holding a glass of wine to the lips of the bathing beauty. The posters strapline ‘Air Like Wine’ features prominently.
The Vintage Travel Poster was illustrated by William A. Sennett, in the 1930s. It reads, “For literature, train services, etc., apply: G.E. Orton, General Agent of the Great Western Railway of England. 505, Fifth Avenue, New York.
In the early 19th century, Weston was a tiny fishing village of about 30 houses. With the opening of the railway in 1841, thousands of visitors came to the town from Bristol, the Midlands and further afield, on works outings and the newly introduced. Weston owes its growth and prosperity to the Victorian era boom in seaside holidays. Its Victorian architecture is still prominently seen around the town.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a print and a frame for a great price.
