Western-Super-Mare poster – Septimus E Scott – 1937
This vintage Weston-Super-Mare railway poster was originally produced jointly by the Great Western Railway (GWR) and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). It was created by the British painter, illustrator and comic book artist, Sep E. Scott.
The Poster features the diving board and Lido in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset. The Lido was brand new when it featured on this Weston-super-Mare railway poster It opened in 1937 the same year the poster was printed.
The iconic seafront landmark featured a 950 square meter swimming pool and an four-level art deco diving board with seven diving boards. Known locally, simply as ‘The Pool’ Weston-super-Mare’s Lido had, at 10 meters high, the highest diving board and was the largest open air pool in Europe.
The Lido was at its height in the fifties and sixties with hundreds of thousands of people visiting the pool for leisure or for shows, competitions and events held there. However, by the end of the sixties, interest in the pool wained. It was decided the whole area should be redeveloped into a more suitable and modern recreational area.
Despite the famous diving board being heritage listed it was demolished with the pool in 1982. The new devopment was opened in 1983 and was branded as The Tropicana Pool. However, this was short lived, closing in 2000 after just 17 years.
According to Wikipedia ‘The iconic seafront landmark re-opened in 2015 following fifteen years of closure, with the creation of the Bay Café – a modern and vibrant licensed café and lounge. ever, this was short lived, closing in 2000 after just 17 years.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
