Vintage travel posters just don’t get better than this!
This vintage travel poster was created by the artist A Schindeler for the ‘Compagnie Generale Transatlantique’and the Compagnie des Messageries Maritime shipping companies in 1891.
The poster promotes the companies’ round-the-world travel by ship and railway. It features a large globe of the northern hemisphere showing the ’round the world’ passenger service route starting at San Franciso. The poster also features each company Ocean Liners, the SS La Touraine and the SS Australien as well as a Pullman Express. The vintage travel poster reads Voyage au tour de Monde – Round the World.
The fantastic illustration shows the journey starting in San Francisco travelling to New York via Chicago by train. Passengers then transfer to the ship La Touraine, sailing to Le Havre. Another transfer to train takes the passenger to Marseille via Paris before boarding the SS Australien continuing the journey across the Mediterranean Sea, through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea and on to the Pacific Ocean.
An original copy of this magnificent Round the World travel poster was sold on an online auction in 2019 for $19,200.
