Vercelli ei Suoi Campi di Neve Vintage Travel Poster – Adalberto Campagnoli – 1951
Here we present our reproduction print of a 1950s vintage ski poster promoting the city of Vercelli as a popular skiing destination. The poster was illustrated in a style not too dissimilar to the work of the famous Italian artist Gino Boccasile. It was, however, the impressive work of another Italian poster designer, Adalberto Campagnoli. The poster features a stylish, fashionable and happy young skier dressed in a white t-shirt, black leggings and ski visor, on the slopes of one of the Piedmont region’s popular ski resorts. Chances are, she has been portrayed at one of the four resorts named on the poster itself, so possibly, Alagna, Alpe di Mera, Oropa or Mucrone.
The woman is pictured standing cheerily with her skis over her shoulder. She is glancing back cheerily towards us, the viewer, obviously enjoying her time on the slopes. To her left, Campagnoli has included two of the resort’s transport options for getting to the top of the mountain, the ski lift and the gondola lift. The magnificent Monte Rosa forms the perfect backdrop to the illustration. Beneath the name of the region Vercellithe poster reads Ei Suoi Campi Di Neve which translates into English as “Vercelli and its fields of snow”. The subheading is likely a reference to the region’s self-proclaimed ‘Capital of Rice’ title and its ‘Vercelli and its fields of rice’ moniker.
Vercelli is one of Italy’s oldest cities, dating back to the 6th century BC. It sits about halfway between Turin and Milan, about an hour’s drive from each. It’s now a well-established centre for the production of rice with paddy fields that stretch as far as the eye can see, with Vercelli producing about half of Italy’s risotto rice.
In winter Vercelli now forms part of the large Monte Rosa ski area that stretches from Alagna (now Alagna Valsesia) in the Piedmont region, across the Salati Pass and the Punta Indren (3260 m), all the way into the Val di Gressoney with the villages of Stafal and Gressoney-La Trinité resorts.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £15. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
