Victoria Motorraader Victoria-Werken Nürnberg Poster – Ludvig Holwein – 1920
This is a reproduction of a vintage motorcycle advertising poster for Victoria Werken A-G. The Victoria works company was founded in 1886 in Nürnberg, Germany. It started its business as a bicycle manufacturer. Even from the company’s early beginnings as bicycle makers posters created by well-known artists formed part of their advertising strategy, as can be seen by this Victoria bicycle poster.
Victoria began to build motorcycles in 1901 and, in the early part of the twentieth century, even having limited success producing automobiles. After the First World War, Victoria was among the leading motorcycle manufacturers in Germany. She owed hsuccess, primarily, to the robust KR model 1 with an engine from Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) which at that time was not yet producing its own vehicles.
This vintage advertising poster was created by the renowned German artist Ludwig Holwein. It is possibly the earliest poster created by the Victoria Werken promoting any of their motorcycles. The poster depicts a motorbike rider sitting astride the KR1 model that was launched in 1920. The use of the blue mimics the paint colour the motorcycle was produced in.
The Victoria KR1 motorcycle had a 494 cc BMW twin-cylinder side-valve flat twin (boxer engine) mounted longitudinally in the motorcycle frame. The engine produced 6.5 bhp (4.8 kW) and transmission was via a two-speed gearbox.
The end of the fifties saw the end of Victoria. The company merged with the Zweirad-Union group which in turn was taken over by Fichtel and Sachs. Motorcycles and mopeds continued to be made under the Victoria name until 1966 but by 1968 the brand had disappeared.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
