Vertigo – Saul Bass – 1958 – Style A Blue

It’s almost unimaginable now but upon its initial release Vertigo received mixed reviews. Vertigo is a 1958 Alfred Hitchcock directed, psychological thriller. It stars James Stewart and Kim Novak. Given its initial, muted reaction the film is looked at in a much more favourable light and is often included in the lists of greatest films ever made.

In 2007 it ranked as the ninth-greatest American movie of all time and in 2012 replaced Citizen Kane as the greatest film ever made  in the British Film Institutes Sight and Sound critics’ poll. In 1989, Vertigo was one of the first 25 films selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”

This is a copy of one of the rarest of all Vertigo film posters. It was designed by the famous graphic designer Saul Bass and was only produced in blue for an advert that only appeared in a single edition of one publication. It was never actually released as a poster. Original copies of the one page advert sell for in the region of £4000. And it does look good!
