Poster: Verona poster – ENIT – 1938
This magnificent vintage Verona poster was produced for Ente Nazionale Italiano per il Turismo better known as ENIT, which was the Italian Government Tourist Board. The poster promotes Verona as a place to visit. The Verona poster concentrates on a specific view of the town that features several of the town’s most famous landmarks.
In the foreground of the poster, sitting in the grounds of the church of Santa Maria Antica are the Scala family tombs, in the form of Gothic shrines, or tempietti, enclosing their sarcophagi. The Della Scala family, also known as Scaligeri or Scaligers were the ruling family of Verona for 125 years between the 13th and 14th centuries.
Cut off on the right-hand side of the poster is Cansignorio’s tomb, memorialized with an equestrian monument created by the Italian sculptor Bonino da Campione, 1374. The Scala Arches are considered to be amongst the most distinguished and impressive monuments of Gothic art in Verona.
Filling half of the right-hand side of the vintage Italian poster is the Palazzo del Podesta. It is a medieval palace that sits in Piazza Dei Signori. It was built by Casignorio in the second half of the 13th century. It is now known as Palazzo del Governo or Government Palace.
At the back of the image is the magnificent looming clock tower of Palazzo Della Ragione, named Torre Dei Lamberti. The Palazzo Della Ragione was built around 1193 and is the oldest city hall in Italy. Originally the construction included four massive towers of which only the Torre dei Lamberti and a stump of a second tower remain.
Verona sits on the banks of the Adige River, in Veneto, Italy. The city is known to millions of people across the world as the setting for two of William Shakespeare’s famous plays, Romeo and Juliet and Two Gentlemen of Verona. In November of 2000, the city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
