Vintage Travel Poster: Uriage les Bains PLM vintage travel poster – F.H.d’Alési – 1895
This vintage Uriage les Bains poster was created by the prolific poster artist Frederic Hugo d’Alesi. His work is certainly of a fine art quality but he was one of the first painters of his century to dedicate himself to poster design, especially travel posters and mainly for the French railway companies.
The Uriage les Bains poster was produced by and for the Paris Lyon Mediterranean PLM railway. It features the Uriage spa complex as it appeared at the turn of the century, sitting in the valley at the foot of the Chartreuse Mountains. The spa is located at an altitude of 414 m, attached to the municipalities of Saint-Martin-d’Uriage and Vaulnaveys-le-Haut, located in the French department of Isère. The department of Isère is one of the original 83 created during the French Revolution in 1790. The spa is within walking distance from Chamrousse station.
The poster also depicts the ancient monastery, Grande Chartreuse high up on the hill behind the village. The monastery is the head monastery of the Carthusian religious order and is probably best known for producing the alcoholic beverage Chartreuse. The recipe of which is said to have been given to the monks by the French Marshal François Annibal d’Estrées in 1605. The monks are said to have worked on perfecting the 130-ingredient recipe for over a century. In 1764, the monks expanded their distillery for the first time to meet the demand of their popular Elixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse. The distillery has since been relocated several times into more remote areas because it represents a major explosion hazard to the surrounding habitations
The order of monks and nuns is still supported by the sales of Chartreuse liqueur which is very popular in France and all around the world. In 2015, the order sold 1.5 million bottles of Chartreuse at €50 a bottle. All proceeds went into financing the order and its charity projects.
The village of Uriage-les-Bains is nestled in a beautiful, lush rural setting about 12 miles from Grenoble. The area has been well-known since the Romans built thermal baths to take advantage of the anti-rheumatic properties of its warm spring water. The village was very popular during the 1920s. By the time of the economic downturn in France in the 1930s, followed by the start of the Second World War and the decline in fashion for hydrotherapy all but finished tourism to the area. The Grande Chartreuse was reopened in 1940, however, at towards the end of the war, the building was used as a hospital by the Allied Forces. Since then most of the luxury hotels and buildings in the area have been turned into apartments.
Today the spa facilities at Uriage les Bains are making a well-deserved comeback with the Grand Hotel and Spa specialising in the treatment of rheumatic, dermatological and respiratory conditions, the spa establishment also offers fitness and well-being breaks. The beautiful town is full of old world charm with the eclectic belle-époque architecture of its hotels, villas and buildings.Original copies of this sought-after but hard-to-find Uriage les Bains poster command a price in the region of €1000.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and poster for just £22.
