The 75th Boat Race took place on 24th March 1923. This fantastic art deco styled Boat Race poster was created by Charles Paine for London Transport, not really to promote the event but to encourage people to use the Underground to go to watch it. To this end this art deco poster includes the names of the best Underground stations to use.
The poster shows the Oxford and Cambridge rowing along the River Thames and Putney Bridge. Strangely, Charles Paine has illustrated one row boat, under the bridge and the cheering crowds, three quarters of a length ahead of the other. This is the distance Oxford actually won the race by, securing their first win in five years.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
