Torquay is a seaside town in Devon, England.Like most seaside towns, Torquay was primarily a fishing harbour and port, but in the early 19th century with the arrival of the railways, it began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort. Torquay, is widely known as the Queen of The English Riviera and is a town full of character. Its warm micro-climate, stunning natural coastal beauty and maritime history was a big hit with the aristocrats of Victorian society and is still popular today.
This reproduction of an original vintage poster illustrated by the artist Xenia, was issued by British Railways and printed by Waterlow & Sons, London & Dunstable.
The view for the painting is at the top of the steps on Rock Walk, now known as the Royal Terrace Gardens that lead back down towards the harbour. Its high vantage point provides a stunning view overlooking the Princess Gardens, the old harbour and the seafront out onto the English Channel.
The couple near the top of the steps are looking down towards the Pavillion Theatre which opened in 1912, but sadly, stands closed awaiting restoration. Behind the Pavillion Theatre is the Old Harbour with Victoria Parade and the South Pier on the other side of the harbour sitting at the bottom of Vane Hill. Across the bay you can just Berry Head, near the fishing town of Brixham.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
