Advertisement poster for The September Pearson’s. Illustration features stormy sea and a naked woman with a dragon standing on the rock in the middle. The cover requests that the reader needs to ‘read The Lost Continent, Cutcliffe Hyre’s great story. The Lost Continent: The Story of Atlantis is a fantasy novel and is considered one of the classic fictional re-tellings of the story of the drowning of Atlantis. Cutcliffe based the story on Plato’s ‘Timaeus’. The story is effectively is a precurser of the story of Noah and his ark, but written some 360 years earlier.
According to Wikipedia: Pearson’s Magazine was a monthly periodical that first appeared in Britain in 1896. A US version began publication in 1899. The magazine specialised in speculative literature, political discussion, often of a socialist bent, and the arts. Its contributors included such luminaries as Upton Sinclair, George Bernard Shaw, Maxim Gorky, George Griffith, H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling, Rafael Sabatini, Dornford Yates and E. Phillips Oppenheim, many of whose short stories and novelettes first saw publication in Pearson’s.
