This superb The Last Judgment poster by Michelangelo features the truly staggering fresco created by the famous Italian Renaissance painter. The painting covers the altar wall in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. Preparations of the altar wall began in 1535 and the painting was completed over six years later in 1541. He has already spent the previous 25 years painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and by the time he finished The Last Judgment, Michelangelo was 67 years old.

The magnificent painting contains over 300 figures and depicts the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity, as described by John the Evangelist in the apocalypse. The fresc0 depicts the moment when the living and dead are judged by Christ, and their souls consigned to heaven or hell.

In Michelangelo’s original work, all the characters would have appeared naked. However, in 1565, the Council of Trent had condemned nudity in religious art. The artist Daniele da Volterra was commissioned to cover them with loincloths, fig leaves and vestments.
