Suffolk poster by John Bee
This vintage Suffolk LNER railway poster was painted by John Bee for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to Suffolk. An idyllic image of a typical village church and house in Suffolk. We’re not certain but we think Bee has chosen the village of Kersey for his setting. Kersey is often described as one of Britain’s prettiest villages. The church on John Bee’s Suffolk poster bears a striking resemblance to the church in Jack Merriot’s Kersey, Suffolk poster, so this could possibly be the church at Kersey at the top of Church Hill. The inclusion of the horse and cart in the image gives the poster a nostalgic feeling.
Suffolk LNER poster artist John Bee
The artist John Francis Bee was born in Wolverhampton in 1895. During his career, he produced several posters and railway carriage prints for the London and North Eastern Railway, the Great Western Railway and British Railways. His artistic style is popular with collectors and several of his posters command high prices when they come up at auction. In addition to the ever-popular Don’t forget my ticket poster, Bee is best known for his other railway posters including his Yorkshire Coast and Somerset posters for the GWR, his Norfolk with its windmill for the LNER, and his Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Norfolk for Happy Holidays. All of which feature idyllic scenes of the various destinations to entice rail passengers to visit. John Bee himself distinguished his poster work and his railway carriage prints as two forms of art. He would sign his railway carriage prints, his posters however, were given a more anonymous signature, the capital letter B.
The perfect English village scene is captured in this idyllic country setting. A beautiful house and a village church sit on a quiet country road where the only traffic seems to be a couple in their horse and cart. John Bee’s vintage Suffolk poster is the perfect addition to any home or office. This beautiful Suffolk poster will be sure to take you back to a time when life was much quieter, slower and simpler. It captures the charm and simplicity of an idyllic English country village, with its quaint church, pretty house, and traditional horse and cart. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful addition to your home décor or a unique gift for a special someone, this poster is the perfect addition to any room and it’s sure to add some old world Suffolk charm to your home.

Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £15. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
