Step Into Your Place World War I Propaganda Poster – 1915

This is a superb reproduction print of a vintage World War I recruitment poster. It was produced by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in May 1915. The British First World War poster was painted by an unknown artist and features a line of people moving into the distance. In the marching column is a judge, bowler-hatted businessmen, a farmer carrying a pitchfork, a bus conductor, a baker carrying a bread basket and a workman with a pickaxe, suggesting that it doesn’t matter what you do or who you are you are welcome to join. As you look further down the line, you notice that they are changing out of their civvy clothes and becoming khaki-wearing soldiers.

 The poster conveys a sense of communal effort and the visual impact of this poster was felt to be so effective that more than 40 million copies of the poster were printed and distributed throughout the British Empire. The poster wass ambiguous enough to speak to individuals no matter where they were from. The poster was originally printed by David Allen and Sons Ltd., Harrow, Middlesex.
