Sports d’Hiver Barcelonnette Ski Poster Basses-Alpes – 1135m – 1928
The French Alps have long been a mecca for skiers from all over the world. And Pierre Michel’s iconic Barcelonnette Ski Poster is one of the most recognizable images of the region. The poster, which dates back to the late 1920s, depicts a skier flying through the air against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The simple, yet effective design captures the excitement and adventure of skiing, and it has helped to put Balconnette on the map as a popular skiing destination in the Alps.
Barcelonnette is a small medieval town located in the southern French Alps at the crossroads between Provence, Piedmont, and the Dauphiné. Today, it is mainly a tourist and travel destination. It is the largest town in the Ubaye Valley and was founded in 1231 by Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Provence. The town is situated at the crossroads between Provence, Piedmont, and the Dauphiné, and is known for its medieval architecture. Many of the buildings in the town centre date back to the 14th century, and the town has a number of historical monuments including the Church of Notre-Dame-du-Bourg, which was built in the 13th century.
Nowadays in winter, Barcelonnette is transformed into a mecca for winter sports enthusiasts, with three downhill ski resorts and two cross-country skiing venues. Downhill skiing is available at Pra-Loup, the largest skiing area in the Alpes du Sud region, which is linked to La Foux d’Allos by L’Espace Lumière. There is also skiing at Sauze-Super-Sauze and Sainte-Anne-la-Condamine. For cross-country skiing, there are venues at Larche and Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye.
Michel’s vintage Barcelonnette ski poster was produced by the Paris, Lyon and Mediterranean French Railway, (PLM) to promote rail travel to the Barcelonnette ski resorts in the French Alps. Today, the Pierre Michel ski poster is highly coveted by collectors, and it continues to inspire people to hit the slopes in search of their own personal Alpine adventure. It also inspires people to buy original copies of this sought-after poster. We can’t find one currently for sale so they’re not that common. In fact, the last one we could find was sold in 2013 for £3750.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
