Once Upon a Time in the West is a 1968 Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leonne.

Leonne had decided to retire from Westerns after The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but he accepted an offer from Paramount Pictures to produce another Western.

It should have been Clint Eastwood’s fourth film with Leonne, but Eastwood turned it down, choosing instead to set up his own production company, Malpaso, and start work on Hang ’em High 

Instead the film stars Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards and Claudia Cardinale with a music score by Ennio Morricone.

This is the Frank McCarthy poster for the German cinema release of the film that wasn’t particularly well received when it came out, especially in America. It has since gone on to become a cult classic, regularly placing high in All-time Best lists and in 2009 was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and has been cited by Directors such as Directors such as Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino and Vince Gilligan as having had an influence on their work. Perhaps Clint should have taken the role, then again, it didn’t really do his career any harm by turning it down!
