Spa poster – Georges Blott – 1899

It is situated in the Ardennes Mountains, near Liege in Belgium. The town of Spa is one of Belgium’s most popular tourist destinations, being renowned for its more than 300 natural, cold mineral springs. The mineral springs are believed to possess special healing properties and the area has been popular place to ‘take the waters’ for health reasons since the 14th century. It is the small Belgian town of Spa, known as ‘The Water City”  which has given its name to any place having a natural water source that is believed to possess health-giving benefits.

This superb poster, dating back to the turn of the century was illustrated by the French artist Georges Blott. In the vintage Spa poster, Blott has featured a young woman who has retrieved water from the well. An elegantly dressed visitor with a parasol is about to proceed in ‘taking the water’. The beautiful town of Spa is seen in the background with the turrets on the roof of the Casino de Spa, built in the 18th century, clearly visible. The poster was commissioned by the Chemins de fer du Nord or the French Northern Railway company. The poster also offers tourists activities such as horse racing, pigeon shooting, the theatre, regattas, the velodrome for cycling, lawn tennis, social promenading, staying up late! and a battle of flowers.
