See America Welcome to Montana – Richard Halls – c1937

This is a superb reproduction of a Work Projects Administration or WPA See America poster dating from around 1937. It is one of a series of posters  in the WPA’s  “See America” series featuring many of America’s most notable landmarks. This See America poster features the Rocky Mountains of Montana.  The artist Richard Halls has created a wonderful, minimalistic view of a Montana landscape with the Rocky Mountain peaks dominating the top half of the poster with the western paraie plains being represented in the lower half of the poster’s design.

Montana has been the home of several native Indian tribes including the Blackfeet, the Assiniboine, the Gros Ventre, the Cree and the Sioux. About 66,000 people of Native American heritage currently live in Montana. Halls’ has referenced this Indian Heritage by featuring a handful of Indian tipi’s and a rider on horseback. This poster was created by the WPA for the United States Travel Bureau, to promote travel to Montana.
