Savoy Hotel St Moritz poster – Karl Bickel – 1918
This vintage Savoy Hotel, St Moritz poster was realised by the artist Karl Bickel. It was created to encourage tourism to the first all year round Swiss sports resort. The Savoy Hotel forms an integral part of the start of Winter tourism in St Moritz and the rest of The Alps. Bickel’s poster portrays the dining room of the Savoy Hotel as a venue for the weathy and elite. Fashionably and elegantly dressed guests relax and chat at tables enjoying the relaxed surroundings.
In 1864, the St Moritz hotel pioneer Caspar Badrutt made a wager with four British summer guests: If they were to return in the winter and find the Swiss village not to their liking, Badrutt would reimburse their travel costs. And if they were to find St Moritz enjoyable in the winter, hw would invite his guests to stay for as long as they wished. It is understood that this wager marked not only the start of winter tourism in St. Moritz but also the start of winter tourism in the whole of the Alps.
The resort quickly expanded its activities with the continents first curling tournament held in 1880. The first European Ice-Skating Championships held in 1882 and first golf tournament in the Alps held in 1889.This was followed by the first bob race held in 1890 and a horse race held on snow in 1906.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
