Save For Defence WWII poster Post Office Savings Bank – Frank Newbould – c1940
The National Savings Movement was initially started in 1916, in the middle of World War One. It was a mass savings scheme available to the British people. It was created with the immediate intention of raising money to help finance the war effort. Savings products promoted by the movement typically offered a low level of return but the safety of a government guarantee. The movement continued between the wars with the money now helping to rebuild Britain the British economy after the war.
During World War Two, the movement once again was vital in raising funds to help with the war. During WWII the Post Office Savings Bank produced dozens of propaganda posters to encourage saving.
This Save for Defense poster, published by the Post Office Savings Bank is one of the best examples. It features artwork by the renowned railway poster artist Frank Newbould. The vintage war poster features a uniformed British Infantryman looking through the sights of his rifle, protecting Britain from possible invasion.
The white cliffs in the background with the beach and sea below, suggest the soldier is positioned at the White Cliffs of Dover on England’s south coast. The poster reads: POST OFFICE SAVINGS BANK SAVE for DEFENCE.
Original copies of this poster sell for around £1000.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £15. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
