La Route des Alpes Vintage Travel Poster – Services Automobiles De Tourisme – De La Mer À La Haute Montagne – Roger Broders – c1920
Roger Broders was a French poster artist who rose to prominence in the early 20th century. His work was characterized by colorful images and striking compositions. Many of his most famous posters were commissioned by the Paris-Lyon-Méditeranée (PLM) railway company. In order to promote travel to the destinations featured in his posters, Broders was given free passage on the PLM trains. This allowed him to experience firsthand the beauty of the French countryside, which he then captured in his paintings, promoting the PLM railway as the best way to see France.
The Alps are one of the most beautiful places on earth, and in the 1920s there was no better way to see them than from a PLM charabanc. This vintage poster by Broders shows just how amazing the views are from high up in the mountains. The road map entwined through the poster not only shows the different destinations the coach will travel to, but it also highlights how easy it is to get around in the Alps. the roads marked on the La Route des Alpes poster are shown from Nice to Geneva and beyond into the Alps. This reinforces the strapline at the foot of the poster that reads – “De la Mer à la Haute Montagne” which translates into English as ‘From the sea to the high mountains.’
La Route des Alpes is a scenic mountain road that traverses the French and Swiss Alps. The route follows the valleys of the Rhône and Dora Baltea rivers and passes through several picturesque towns, including Chamonix, Courmayeur, and Aosta. The route stretches for over 200 miles, winding through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Europe. The road reaches a maximum elevation of nearly 9,000 feet at the Col de la Bonette pass and offers stunning views of some of the Alps’ highest peaks, including Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. La Haute Route des Alpes is considered one of the most scenic routes in Europe. Parts of the route are now used in the famous Tour de France cycle race each year.
Roger Broders work is, quite rightly, highly regarded and posters are amongst the most sought after of all original Swiss travel posters.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and poster for just £22.
