Poster: Psycho film poster – Alfred Hitchcock – Mario Quibus – 1960
This is a reproduction of the Psycho movie poster. Psycho is probably, the most famous of all Alfred Hitchcock’s films. The American psychological horror-thriller was originally released in 1960 and stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin and Martin Balsam.
The film is based on a Robert Bloch novel of the same name which was loosely inspired by the real-life case of convicted murderer and grave robber Ed Gein.
The artwork for the poster was created by the Spanish film poster artist and designer Macario Gómez Quibu. It is possibly the most famous of all Alfred Hitchcock’s films. The poster features a large image of Janet Leigh as Marion Crane. Cameo images of Anthony Perkins and John Gavin also feature
The names of the main actors are featured down the right side of the poster. The word Psycho appears in large yellow print at the foot of the poster created to look as though it has been slashed through with a knife.
Quibu perhaps better known by his professional name of Mac has been responsible for some of the design of some of the best posters for some of Hollywood’s best-known films. Some of his
best-known film posters include Doctor Zhivago (1965), For a Few Dollars More (1965), The Ten Commandments (1956), Some Like It Hot (1959), La Gran Familia (1962), and Dr. No (1962).
Psycho became one of Hitchcock’s most profitable films, earning $32 million worldwide. In 1992, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
