Portofino poster – Mario Puppo – 1941
This is a vintage 1941 Italian travel poster by Mario Puppo promoting tourism to Portofino. The resort of Portofino is an Italian fishing village and holiday destination famous for its colourfully painted buildings that line the seafront. This Mario Puppo designed Portofino travel poster features the large white sails of yachts on the water of Portofino’s picturesque harbour. The area was a popular destination for artists, novelists, aristocrats and celebrities.
The Portofino Coast website provides a list of famous visitors that includes: Guglielmo Marconi, Sir Winston Churchill, Prince Ranier and Princess Grace. In the 1950s Rex Harrison had a villa built there. Other stars holidayed at the village, including Rita Hayworth, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Ava Gardner. And more recently Robert De Niro, Liza Minnelli, George Clooney, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Denzel Washington, Ringo Starr, Barbra Streisand and Rod Stewart.
This vintage Portofino poster was produced by the Provincial Tourist Board of Genoa in 1941.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £15. So you can bag a print and frame for a great price.
