Zakopane Kasprowy Polish ski poster
To promote the construction of the Zakopane Kasprowy cablecar in 1936,and to promote Zakopane as a worthy ski destination the Polish Ski Association commissioned Stefan Osiecki & Jerzy Walerian Skolimowski to produce this pre-war vintage Polish ski poster.
The poster’s ariel viewpoint prominently displays the new cable car in situ with several skiers cutting through the snow on the ground below. In the background are the snow-capped mountain peaks of the Tatra mountains.
The Zakopane Kasprowy Kolejka Linowa
From 1910 onwards Kasprowy Wierch became very popular among ski tourists. By the 1930s skiing had taken over from ice skating as the winter sport of choice amongst the Polish people and Zakopane had become so popular that an aerial kolejka, the Zakopane Kasprowy cableway, was built to take skiers (almost) to the summit of Kasprowy Wierch.
Kolejka na Kasprowy Wierch or, in English, the Zakopane Kasprowy cableway, ran from Kuźnice to the top of Kasprowy Wierch in the Tatra Mountains. The cableway was initially conceived in 1934. It was the idea of the then president of the Polish Ski Association and the deputy minister of communication, Aleksander Bobkowski.Despite many objections from nature conservation activists, and 94 scientific and tourist institutions against the construction, the Zakopane Kasprowy cableway was completed on February 26, 1936. It was the first investment of this type in Poland and only the sixtieth in the world.
The Zakopane Kasprowy cableway is now one of the oldest téléphériques in Europe. The cable cars are extremely popular, carrying about half a million people per year. Tourists often have to wait up to 3 hours to buy tickets – roughly the same time it would take to ascend the mountain on foot!
