Palais de Glace Champs-Elysés – Jules Chéret – Le Maîtres de l’Affiche Plate 17

Jules Chéret was a prolific poster artist with a style that is as popular today as it was in the 19th century. This classic Jules Chéret poster was produced in 1895 for the Palais de Glace or Ice Palace on the Champs-Elysées. The Théâtre du Rond-Point was a theatre in Paris, opened in 1838. By December 1893, it had been renamed the Palais de Glace and was one of the most popular attractions of Belle Epoque Paris.

Chérets posters are often typified by beautiful, sophisticated women, usually a redhead, elegantly dressed in the fashions of the time. This poster advertising the venue Palais de Glace poster follows this theme with a couple on ice skates. Chéret has cleverly illustrated the gentleman almost in silhouette so that the focus is on the lady. Chéret thought highly enough of this poster to include it as plate 17 of 256 in the classic Maitres de l’affiches collection.

This plate is from the Maitres de l’Affiche (Masters of the Poster) collection one of 256 color lithographic plates delivered to monthly subscribers in sets of four beginning in 1895 and continuing through 1900. The collection was reproduced from the original posters of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 15 3/4 x 11 3/8 inch (40 x 29 cm) format. The individual plates were issued as separate numbered sheet, with the printer’s name, “Imprimerie Chaix,” in the margin at the bottom left hand corner.
