Nimes Centre de Tourisme – Jacques Barthes – c1960
Nîmes in Southern France is nicknamed the most Roman city outside Italy. It has a rich history dating back to the Roman Empire when the city was a regional capital. There are many famous monuments in Nîmes, including the Arena of Nîmes and the Maison Carrée.
This fantastic Nimes poster features the ancient ruins of the city bursting out of a map of the area. The artist Jacques Barthes has selected the Nimes Ampitheatre considered to be the best preserved Roman era amphitheatre in the world. It is still used for various events today.
The Pont du Gard is also represented. The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD to carry water to Nîmes. It is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges, as well as one of the best preserved. It was added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites in 1985.
The third ancient structure featured on the Nimes poster is the Maison Carrée. The Maison Carrée is an ancient Roman temple which is also one of the best preserved Roman temples to survive in the territory of the former Roman Empire.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a print and frame for a great price.
